The campaign workers of Ottawa South NDP candidate George Brown were piqued Sunday morning to learn that the candidate’s lawn signs on Alta Vista Drive had been vandalized.
From Pleasant Park Road to Heron Road, Brown’s large lawn signs were crushed and their metal supports twisted beyond repair, while the smaller signs were uprooted by their stakes and strewn about, says James Whittall, the communications director for Brown.
Whittall says lawn signs for Liberal candidate David McGuinty, the incumbent in this Liberal stronghold, and Conservative Dev Balkissoon were unharmed.
“It could very well be some kids out on a tear,” he says. “It’s interesting that only we were targeted.”
Replacing broken signs costs a campaign, but this is likely not the last case of lawn sign destruction in the election campaign.
“Every expense adds up. It’s not just the annoyance, it’s a disrespect of the process,” says Whittall.
Alta Vista residents looking to replace vandalized signs can visit the campaign office at 1000 Brookfield Road, call 613-501-1528, or email George.Brown@ndp.ca
